My Vegan Story

Hi everyone! Some of you I may know and some of you I may not. I feel like this is a very important topic I need to share with the world. As one of my first posts talking about the subject, I feel like it is very important to tell My Vegan Story. Many of you I'm sure can relate and this might help you during your transition.

    So it all began in April of this year (2016) and I was trying to learn more about why I wasn't feeling right. I was getting less and less active, I started to bloat, and gain some weight. I was never overweight growing up but it does run my family to be overweight. So go back about a year or so and my mom happen to be in the process of changing diet drastically. I was intrigued. My mom has been vegan/vegetarian since age 14. It was a personal choice. I'm thankful I've been exposed to this lifestyle at such a young age. I was eating tempeh and tofu before it was cool ;) But the problem was my mom was a junk food vegan. Its sad but the truth. She wasn't happy with how she was looking and feeling as she should. Here comes the bad part so she became....PALEO. And I followed her. It is kind of the trend nowadays. Low carb, high fat. It's what all the fitness people are talking about. AND the health conscious people which is what really blows my mind. It is not our fault we were influenced by these people. They always look so healthy and strong. This paleo diet was and still is all over the media and more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon. Not say that paleo is all bad. It does have two good points. No dairy, No processed food. Both good things but it's the meat...the eggs...and the super high fat that's killer...literally. So we were both on this journey together I guess. I started working out way more than I should have (I mean constantly thinking about the next time I could do a squat or push-up) and so did my mom. She joined a gym and later started going to yoga (perfect). All was pretty good. We both lost weight and felt much better. But soon this lifestyle became old and tiresome. I was always going to bed hungry and always exercising. My mom was totally believing in the whole paleo thing. This is what is healthy and good for our bodies etc etc. It was hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that we were wrong. I was constantly looking for other alternatives for diet. I started to gain weight again and ended up weighing the exact same as I did before even changing my diet. And I had stopped working out completley. It was so frustrating and I felt like a total failure. So long behold I came across veganism. I watched countless videos and read a number of studies and books like the Starch Solution and the China Study. I went completely cold turkey. Meaning I changed overnight. In the middle of May I told my parents, friends and family. They were all shocked. Most had many questions I didn't have the answers to yet. My best friend (Maddie) came to visit a couple weeks after I had become vegan and she was intrigued. We have always been the most animal loving girls. That is ALL we talked about as little kids. We both wanted to be veterinarians (not anymore) and wanted to have farms and things like that. We never really made the connections between what's on our plate and the living, breathing, creatures we adore. So a couple weeks later, after she had been doing some research herself...Maddie went vegan too. We support each other and rant all the time about the issues we have with people asking us the dumbest questions and how nutrition is taught in schools. We have both decided to do something with our future that benefits our earth, the animals, and our health. We aren't sure what that entails yet but I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. My outlook on life has completley changed and I'm so happy I made the switch. I'm looking forward to blogging more about the subject and helping spread the word on such an important subject. Whether you have a love for animals, are an environmentalist, or are super health conscious, this lifestyle is the only one for you. As you can see above, there is so much healthy and amazing tasting vegan food out there. So if that's what is holding you back then please look at my recipe blog as well. Nowadays you can practically veganize any of your favorite meals. Pizza, cookies, pasta, ice cream, burgers, tacos, cake, whatever you fancy there is a vegan alternative. Please do your research and get educated so you can make a change too. I am the change I want to see in the world. And I hope you are too.
